Jakub Jakubowicz

Jakub Jakubowicz is a sculptor awarded for his concise approach to issues connected with memory and its transfer. His participation in Naked Nerve assumes a meeting with displaced persons. Just as in the artist’s earlier projects, they include former inhabitants of Wólka, a Lemko village, and their descendants moved to the Ukrainian resort of Truskavets. In the project, the artist sets a goal for himself – to explore the resort (when it is possible) and find conjunctions between Wólka and Truskavets. Co-established with Joanna Rajkowska after their conversations, the key to his quest is ozokerite “discovered” by Jakubowicz, a substance which is the basis of attractiveness of Truskavets as a health resort. Ozokerite (also known as earth wax) is a result of oxidation of petroleum during its migration towards the surface of the earth, filling the fissures and crevices of sedimentary rock. “I’m interested in the medicinal properties of the material, its ability to change shape dynamically and the fact that it is extracted from the earth. It is important that the main deposits of ozokerite are located in this part of Ukraine,” says Jakubowicz. “I want to initiate a transfer of ozokerite from Truskavets to Wólka. I would like the wax to be moved and settled in unnatural conditions and surroundings. The melted liquid wax will be placed under the surface of the soil and adapted to the environment while solidifying. The activity is a reversal of the situation of displacement.”
